Orthopaedic Regenerative Medicine and Orthobiologic Therapy
Supporting the Body’s Natural Healing Response
At the Center for Veterinary Pain Management & Sports Medicine, orthobiologic therapy may be considered for selected pets with joint disorders, osteoarthritis, tendon injuries or other musculoskeletal conditions. These therapies are never recommended based on symptoms alone. Treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis and a clear understanding of the structure contributing to pain, lameness or reduced function.
When Might Orthobiologic Therapy Be Considered?
Depending on the diagnosis and individual patient, orthobiologic therapy may be incorporated into care for:
- Selected joint disorders and osteoarthritis
- Tendon, ligament or other soft-tissue injuries
- Sports-related or repetitive-use injuries
- Persistent pain or lameness
- Reduced mobility or athletic performance
- Conditions that have not improved as expected with previous care
Not every injury or patient is an appropriate candidate. Recommendations are based on the type and severity of the condition, diagnostic findings, overall health, previous treatment and the pet’s activity or quality-of-life goals.
A Diagnosis-First Approach
Before recommending orthobiologic therapy, our doctors perform a detailed orthopedic, neurologic and functional evaluation. Diagnostic ultrasound, radiographs, MRI or other advanced imaging may be recommended when additional information is needed.
This evaluation helps determine:
- Which joint, tendon or soft-tissue structure is involved
- The severity and stage of the condition
- Whether a targeted orthobiologic procedure is appropriate
- How the therapy should be integrated with the patient’s broader care plan
More Than a Single Procedure
Orthobiologic therapy is most effective when viewed as one component of comprehensive musculoskeletal care—not as a stand-alone injection or guaranteed solution.
A patient’s individualized plan may also include:
- Pain and medication management
- Controlled therapeutic exercise
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation
- Activity modification
- Strength and mobility training
- Progressive return to sport, work or normal daily activity
- Ongoing reassessment and plan adjustments
This coordinated approach allows our team to address both the diagnosed condition and the movement patterns, weakness or compensation that may affect recovery.
